Q2 Crime Stats

Following the release of the Insurance Crime Bureau’s 2022 Annual Report which highlighted South Africa’s first quarter crime statistics, the South African Police Service has released the crime statistics for the second quarter of the year from July to September 2022.

The latest police statistics show that there has been a general increase in crimes in all the top categories. The overall increase in reported crime (approximately 40.8%) is a serious concern and according to the statistics, there were 7004 murders during the period under review, which is an increase of 841 (13.6%) compared to the previous quarter.

Public Private Partnerships and Information sharing remain the reasons for hope despite the state of crime and policing in South Africa. While we know and appreciate that the current socio-economy has directly impacted crime levels, we will continue bringing together the collective resources of insurance companies, law enforcement agencies and other stakeholders to facilitate the detection, prevention and mitigation of insurance crimes as well as assist in the prosecution of offenders and fraudsters through ongoing insurance fraud investigations.
