Truck Hijacking Syndicate Arrested

Three suspected members of a truck hijacking syndicate were arrested and charged for truck hijacking and kidnapping, with a hostage being successfully rescued.

During an intelligence driven operation by the South African Police Service, with assistance from the Insurance Crime Bureau, Tracker Connect, Protea Coin Chopper, SAPS Olifantsfontein and other industry partners, acted on intelligence about a possible hijacking in progress.

A member of the multi-disciplinary team spotted a vehicle pulling over a truck on the highway, in a seemingly hostile manner with all signs pointing towards a hijacking. Moments later the truck proceeded South on the R21 highway being escorted by the suspects’ vehicle as well as another vehicle with foreign registration plates which later accompanied them.

A high-speed chase ensued, but the suspects were arrested as they made a bid for their escape on foot after their vehicle came to a standstill on a gravel road. The suspects were contained and arrested and the truck driver was found tied and kept hostage but luckily unharmed. Following preliminary investigation, it was established that the suspects can possibly be linked to numerous truck hijackings & other relate crimes.

Congratulations to our investigators, Law Enforcement Agencies and everyone involved in removing these criminals off our streets! This has once again proven the importance of Public Private Partnerships which has resulted in a huge breakthrough in addressing organised crime.
