Vehicle Hijacking Suspect Fatally Wounded

A vehicle hijacking and armed robbery suspect was fatally wounded and two escaped, following a high-speed chase and shootout with SAPS and private security officers in the Johannesburg CBD on Monday 06 June 2022.

During an intelligence driven operation consisting of members from SAPS Crime Intelligence with assistance from the Insurance Crime Bureau, Gauteng Highway Patrol Unit, Gauteng Traffic Saturation Unit, Tracker Connect and other industry partners, acted on intelligence about a syndicate committing armed robberies and vehicle hijackings around Johannesburg.

The suspects' vehicle was spotted with three occupants in Mayfair. Upon being cornered, the suspects sped off and began shooting at members of the team and a shootout ensued. Two suspects jumped out of the moving vehicle and fled on foot while Police continued to chase the suspects' vehicle until it crashed into an electric pole.

One suspect with gunshot wounds was found inside the vehicle and was later certified deceased by the paramedics. Preliminary investigation revealed that the vehicle was fitted with false registration plates and was reportedly hijacked in Kempton Park in May this year. An unlicensed firearm and ammunition were also found inside the suspects' vehicle.

We applaud the multidisciplinary teams that have in the past months intercepted numerous suspects that are involved in armed robberies and vehicle hijackings.
